Papelbon suspended three games, will appeal

Boston Red Sox reliever Jonathan Papelbon has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions, which included making contact with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo, during the top of the ninth inning of his Club’s Saturday, June 4th game against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park.

Papelbon’s suspension was scheduled to begin being served during Boston’s game tonight against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, but he has elected to appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

"I haven't talked to anybody so I don't really have a comment," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said a few minutes ago. "I'm sure I'll talk to somebody at some point. I haven't even seen the video. I didn't think he bumped him. It didn't look like it."

How long is Randazzo suspended for? He was yelling at Papelbon after Papelbon had turned away which led to the bumping.

If Papelbon had taken his hat off, there would have been no "bump." There was incidental contact with the brim of his hat, and that's it.

But there really is no question who instigated that one. Let's see if Torre is serious about wanting to deal with umpires gone bad.

EDIT: That's not fair to Joe Torre. Let me rephrase: Let's see if Bud Selig is serious about letting Joe Torre deal with umpires gone bad.

Interesting, too...in baseball, if the umpire starts an argument with you and part of your hat touches him, you get a 3 game suspension.

In hockey if you deliver a deliberate blindside hit to the head that could literally end a career, it's 4 games.

I think maybe they both got it wrong.

Part of the umpires CBA, disciplinary actions are handled privately.
Thus we'll never know how MLB handled Joe West's disgraceful display with Francona a few weeks back.

They are human and Papelbon is a prick. I'm not saying Randazzo was in any way justified, in fact if he ignored Papelbon, who wasn't even facing him, there would be nothing to talk about. Any time a player or coach makes any contact with an ump, there's a suspension. He's getting suspended, but I bet they drop it to two.

By that logic, if an umpire punches a player in the face, does the player get suspended for contacting their fist?

A line I saw about Papelbon a few weeks ago on Twitter made me laugh: Jonathan Palelbon - because that douche isn't going to bag itself.

I don't have any complaints about Papelbon as a pitcher, but I cringe when he gives post-game interviews. It doesn't matter what he says, all I can hear is 'I'm a moron.'
